Why Buying a Home Should Prompt You to Write a Will
Buying a home is one of life’s biggest milestones.
Whether it is your first property, a move to somewhere bigger, or a home you hope to stay in for years, it is a major financial and personal commitment.
It is also a good time to think about your Will.
A home is often one of the most valuable assets a person owns, so writing or updating your Will helps make sure your wishes are clear about what should happen to it in the future.
From 7 September to 31 October 2026, The Care Workers’ Charity is partnering with Octopus Legacy for Free Wills Month, giving you the opportunity to write or update your Will for free.
Your home is part of your future
When you buy a property, you are making plans for the future.
You may be building a life with a partner, creating a family home, investing in your independence, or simply putting down roots somewhere that matters to you.
Whatever your circumstances, owning a home changes the picture.
Your Will gives you the chance to clearly set out what you would like to happen to your property and other possessions, helping make sure your wishes are understood.
Why homeowners should review their Will
Buying a home can significantly change your financial circumstances.
If you do not have a Will, it may be a good time to write one.
If you already have one, buying a property is a useful reminder to review it and make sure it still reflects your current situation.
It is also worth thinking about other changes that may have happened alongside the move, such as:
- Getting married or entering a civil partnership
- Moving in with a partner
- Having children or other dependants
- Taking on a mortgage
- Building up savings or other assets
- Changing who you would like to benefit from your estate
Your Will should reflect the life you have now, not the life you had when it was first written.
Make sure your wishes are clear
Writing a Will gives you more control over what happens to the things you have worked hard for.
That includes your home, but it can also include savings, investments, valuable possessions and other assets.
It can help provide peace of mind, knowing that your wishes are written down and the people who matter to you have been considered.
For homeowners, that clarity can be especially important because property can represent such a significant part of an estate.
Protect the people you care about
A Will is not only about possessions.
It is also about people.
Writing or updating your Will allows you to think carefully about who you want to provide for and what you would want to happen in the future.
If you have children or dependants, it can also be an opportunity to make important decisions about their care.
For many people, this is one of the biggest reasons to stop putting off writing a Will.
Leave a legacy that matters
Once you have taken care of your loved ones, you may also choose to leave a gift to a cause that matters to you.
A gift in your Will to The Care Workers’ Charity could help support care workers for generations to come, including people experiencing financial hardship, crisis or difficult periods in their lives.
There is no obligation to leave a gift, and your Will should always reflect your own wishes and priorities.
But if care workers, social care or The Care Workers’ Charity have played an important role in your life, leaving a gift can be one way of continuing that support into the future.
