Five Things Every Newly Married Couple Should Do
Getting married is one of life’s biggest milestones, and it is also a good time to make sure the practical side of your future is in order.
One of the most important things to think about is your Will.
Marriage can change your circumstances significantly, so whether you are writing a Will for the first time or reviewing one you already have, it is worth making sure your wishes still reflect the life you are building together.
From 7 September to 31 October 2026, The Care Workers’ Charity is partnering with Octopus Legacy for Free Wills Month, giving you the opportunity to write your Will for free.
It’s also a useful moment to look at some of the other practical things that can change after marriage, from your finances and insurance to your personal details and future plans. Here are five things every newly married couple should consider:
1. Update your important records
If either of you has changed your name, make sure your key records are updated.
That might include your bank, employer, driving licence, passport, insurance providers, pension providers and utility accounts.
Getting those details aligned early can save confusion later.
2. Review your finances together
Marriage is a good opportunity to look at the bigger financial picture.
You may want to review savings, debts, mortgages, pensions, insurance and any joint or individual accounts so you both understand what is in place.
You do not need to combine everything, but it helps to know where important information is kept and what each of you would need to know if circumstances changed.
3. Check your insurance and beneficiary details
A major life change is a good reason to review your insurance policies and any beneficiary nominations you have in place.
Make sure the details still reflect your current circumstances and the people you want to provide for.
4. Talk about your future plans
It is worth having conversations about what you both want your future to look like.
That could include plans for a home, children, savings, retirement or simply the things that matter most to you both.
Those conversations can make future decisions much easier.
5. Write or update your Will
And finally, one of the most important things you can do after getting married is make sure your Will reflects your new circumstances.
A Will gives you the opportunity to clearly set out what you would like to happen to your money, property and possessions, and make important decisions about the people closest to you.
It can also give you peace of mind knowing your wishes are written down and the people you love have been considered.
Through our partnership with Octopus Legacy, you can access a free Will service and take the next step towards making sure your plans are in place.
Not sure whether you need to write a new Will or update the one you already have? Octopus Legacy’s estate-planning quiz can help you understand where you stand and suggest your next steps.
Once you have taken care of your loved ones, you may also choose to remember a cause that matters to you.
A gift in your Will to The Care Workers’ Charity could help support care workers for generations to come. There is no obligation to leave a gift, and your Will should always reflect your own wishes and priorities.
Tick one more thing off your newlywed list
Getting married is about building a future together, and writing or updating your Will is one practical way to help protect that future.
During Free Wills Month, from 7 September to 31 October 2026, The Care Workers’ Charity is partnering with Octopus Legacy to encourage people to take that important step.
The free Will offer is available through our partnership beyond the campaign period too, but Free Wills Month is a good opportunity to stop putting it off and get started.
