Champions Hear from our Champions Hear from our Champions Hear about the role and benefits of being a Champion directly from some of our current Champions! Kieran from Hartford Care told us about his experience: How did you get involved with the Care Workers Charity? I work for Hartford Care who chose the Care Worker Charity as their nominated charity for 2017 and again 2018. I started fundraising for the CWC at West Cliff Hall Care Home where I work. Following which I was asked by my manager to become a Champion for the charity. In your owns words, what does a CWC Champion do? I think of ways to raise money for CWC. Organise events like fundraisers and awareness sessions. A natural part of my job role at Hartford Care is to talk to a variety of individuals, some prospective residents, others health and social care professionals, as well as members of the wider community surrounding West Cliff Hall. I always mention the CWC, how beneficial their work is to the Care Community and what it means as a care worker to know there is an organisation actively supporting Care Workers in the UK. What has been your favourite event you have run or participated in? The staff and I at West Cliff Hall organised a charity auction. We spoke to local businesses, kindly asking if they would like to donate an item to auction. We had an amazing array of items to auction on the night. Luxury hampers, a ride in a Ferrari, spa treatments and a beautiful handmade patchwork quilt to name a few. On the night we managed to raise over £700! Its my favourite event so far because it was an opportunity for us not only to raise some money for the CWC, but also talk to people in the local community about the charity. Did you attend the volunteer conference, if so what did you think of the day? I attended the Champion Conference held in Reading earlier this year. It was a lovely opportunity to meet other CWC Champions and share ideas, successes, and ways to better understand how we can endorse the charity and their positive work. It was particularly good to spend time with the team from CWC and listen to the advice and support they have to offer. Have you experienced any personal benefits from being a Champion? Yes, I’ve had the opportunity to undertake and achieve things I wouldn’t have necessarily had the opportunity to do if I weren’t a Champion. The CWC have kindly given me the opportunity to take advantage of Perkbox, a discount club that offers discounts and special offers across an array of shops and services. The CWC have also shared some training courses with Champions to help us carry out the role. We actually did a module at the Champions day, which not only is relevant to the Champion role but also transferable to my employment at Hartford Care. What would you say to people who may be considering becoming a Champion? Do it!! It’s a bit of extra commitment but the results greatly exceed the extra effort, and to be honest, the added support of the CWC team means it doesn’t feel like ‘extra work’, more so just lots of fun. I work in the care sector because I want to support people. Becoming a Champion has given me the opportunity to contribute towards supporting others who share that same mentality and drive to help others regardless of their own personal and social circumstances. It’s brilliant to be part of something so meaningful. If you would like to take Kieran's advice and sign up to be a Champion click here to register your interest and we’ll be in touch soon.
